5.0 Conclusions and Recommendations
Based on the laboratory results, current regulatory guidelines, and the judgment of IT, the
following conclusions and recommendations are offered.
• The geophysical survey reported an anomaly that suggests a UST might still exist
at the site.
The geophysical survey (Geocon, 2001) indicated that the USTs associated with the
pump island may have been removed; however, there is no regulatory report on file
to support this conclusion.
• The soil samples analyzed during this site investigation were not reported to
contain TPHg, TPHd, TPHo, BTEX or MTBE at concentrations exceeding the
analytical method reporting limits.
TPHd and TPHo and were detected in groundwater grab samples collected from the
two HSA borings.
BTEX and MTBE were not detected above the reporting limits in the two
groundwater samples.
• The groundwater data is interpreted to indicate that past use has impacted the
groundwater quality and that a release of petroleum hydrocarbons may have
occurred at the site.
Three remedial actions and the associated costs are presented in Appendix E.
Construction health and safety precautions related to potential chemical exposure that are
recommended include:
• Wearing coveralls (or equivalent), safety glasses, work boots, and hardhat as
personal protective equipment to eliminate or limit exposure to soil.
• Workers should not eat, drink, smoke, or apply cosmetics while working at the site
when soil exposures are possible.
The soil excavation should be screened with a Photoionization Detector(PID) or
Flame Ionization Detector (FID) for levels of volatile organic gases. An action
level of 5 ppm above background is recommended as a stop work level.
• Workers should be provided hazard communications training regarding potential
for exposure to chemicals, the signs and symptoms of exposures, and emergency
actions if exposures should occur relative to petroleum hydrocarbons detected in
the soil.
AS4CMACOMMOARs tDH100APRAPJMM34780.2m.Coc 5_1
