HAZARD EVALUATION
Although no hazardous contaminants are known to occur at the site, aerially
LA deposited lead adjacent to the roads might be present, possibly at hazardous
_ concentrations. Lead contamination (if any) is expected to occur on/within site soils and
contact with dust (inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption, skin and/or eye contact) is
expected to be the primary health hazard. However, this plan provides for measures to
ensure excessive exposure will not occur, regardless of the presence and physical state of
the contaminant.
The primary impacts associated with metal-contaminated soils are the health effects
of metal poisoning. Most metal poisoning results from inhalation or ingestion of
contaminated dust from the site, or from drinking water contaminated with soluble metals
compounds. The health effects of metal poisoning range from loss of appetite, anemia,
malaise, insomnia, headache, irritability, muscle and joint pains, tremors, gastritis, muscle
weakness, kidney damage, and liver damage to acute poisoning, cancer risk, reproductive
damage, and death. For lead, the OSHA exposure limit (TWA) is 0.050 mg/m3 and the
IDLH is 100 mg/m3.
5.3 LEVEL OF PROTECTION
For the proposed excavation and sampling activities, personnel working at the site
will initially be required to wear Level D protection. This protection will include the
following:
• Coveralls, or work uniform (jeans and long sleeve shirt)
steel-toed boots,
• hard hat,
• disposable gloves during sample handling or other operations requiring soil
L.. contact,
• eye protection, as necessary,
5
