•
/10aytori
a.oo
content using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) as a guide, and samples
were selected from each boring location and placed into a sealed plastic bag for field
screening using a photoionization detector(PID) to evaluate for the presence of volatile
vapors that may be released from the soil sample and collect in the headspace of the bag.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLING
At depths up to 5 feet below ground surface, soil samples were collected using a slide
hammer. These soil samples were collected in brass tubes within a sample barrel in the
slide hammer. The brass tubes were then sealed with Teflon tape and capped with plastic
end caps. At depths greater than 5 feet bgs, the soil sample cores selected for laboratory
analysis were cut from the plastic liners. Upon retrieval, the liner ends were covered with
Teflon tape and plastic end caps. Following their collection, all samples were labeled and
placed in a pre-chilled ice chest for delivery to the analytical laboratory. Chain-of-
custody records were completed and accompanied the sample shipments to the
laboratory.
All borings were sealed and abandoned in accordance with SJCEHD requirements. The
drill cuttings were stockpiled on plastic sheeting and covered, pending the receipt of
analytical data to arrange for disposal at an appropriate disposal facility.
3.4. ANALYTICAL TESTING OF SOIL SAMPLES
All soil samples collected were submitted to SPL Laboratory of Houston, Texas, a state
of California certified laboratory, for analysis according to the following method:
• Diesel/crude oil range petroleum hydrocarbons (DRO) using United States
Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA)Method 8015B Modified(8015B).
The reported DRO results are for carbon ranges C10 through C35, extending into
the oil range hydrocarbons.
Selected soil samples from borings B2 and B5 were also analyzed according to the
following methods:
• Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) according to USEPA Method 8260
I • Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds according to according to USEPA Method
8270.
• Metals, according to California Administrative Manual (CAM 17 metals).
Soil sample B2 at 4.0'—4.5'was also analyzed for Gasoline Range Organics and DRO
using Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP).
S:1ES\PR0MCTS\2004\04696 SAell Tracy Pump Station\Repos\I W4 .DOC
2
