Box 2009
1601 East Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, CA 95201-6229
RE: SAN JOAQUIN DELTA COLLEGE IRRIGATION WELL
Quarterly Monitoring
(Site Code 2163 - Montgomery Ward)
Dear Mr. Infuma:
Reference your letter to Montgomery Ward dated December 29, 1997, which among other
things, requested that Montgomery Ward and Unocal provide a schedule and protocc}I for
quarterly monitoring of the irrigation well owned and operated by San Joaquin Delta College
located near the southwest corner of the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Robinhood Drive.
Montgomery Ward is willing to comply with your request.
Montgomery Ward proposes that Unocal and it alternate monitoring events, i.e., Montgomery
Ward will complete the monitoring for the Second Quarter 1998, Unocal will complete the
Third Quarter 1998 event, and so on. EAI was informed that Delta College has installed a
sampling port on a part of the irrigation well extraction piping. Ground water samples from
the well will be collected from this port. Each sample will be tested for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline by modified EPA Method 8015, and volatile organic compounds
including methyl tertiary butyl ether by EPA Method 8260.
EAI contacted Dan Watson at Delta College regarding the sampling port recently installed on
the irrigation well. Mr. Watson and EAI agreed that using the sampling port to collect ground
water for analytical testing will only provide representative samples of ground water from the
aquifer when the well is being used to extract ground water for irrigation purposes, usually
between the months of April to October. Sampling can be performed at other times but i will
only provide a sample of the standing water within the well. Therefore, please confirm that
the County stills desires sampling of the well when it is not in use.
EAI staff and Ms. Toni Cardinelli of Delta College have discussed providing representath es of
Montgomery Ward and Unocal access to the site. Ms. Cardinelli stated Delta College is
willing to grant access rights for the purpose of sampling the irrigation well.
EAI staff contacted Bob Baust of Unocal to discuss alternating sampling events. Unocal
indicated that it would prefer that Montgomery Ward complete all the sampling events and
PLANNING,ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSES AND
HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES MANAGEMENTAND REMEDIATION
