I
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE SOP-9
GROUND WATER MONITORING WELL SAMPLING
The purpose of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is to provide information on how to
' sample a ground water monitoring well Methods explained in this SOP may differ from those
contained in a project specific Work Plan (WP) or Sample Analysis Plan (SAP), and the project
specific WP or SAP should be consulted for modifications to the methods listed below For
purposes of this SOP, it is assumed that a ground water monitoring well has already been installed,
' developed and stabilized from development activities, and that a ground level elevation has been
established for the well
IWELL GAUGING
Prior to conducting any purging or sampling activities, depth measurements to fluid levels, e g ,
free-product (should any be present) and ground water will be recorded using an interlace probe
accurate to 0 01 foot The measurements will be obtained from a known point located either at the
top of the well casing or well cover Information associated with the sampling will be recorded on
the Environmental Audit, Inc (EAI) Ground Water Sampling Log (copy attached)
FREE-PRODUCT
If free-product is present in the well, no purging activities will be conducted prior to sampling A
sample will be collected that is indicative of the thickness of the free-product within the well This
will be accomplished by the use of a disposable bottom bailer The sample will be sealed in an
appropriate sampling container depending upon the type of product encountered For example, if
the product is gasoline or a similar light end petroleum product, the sample will be sealed in 40-
millimeter
o-millimeter (ml) volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials with Teflon septa lined lids Difterent
containers may be required for other types of product Consult the project specific Work Plan or
Sample Analysis Plan for specifics
GROUND WATER
IPrior to sampling, the well will be purged of three to four welt casing volumes of water using a
down-hole pump or bailer Temperature, conductivity, turbidity and pH readings will be recorded
to evaluate the eftectiveness of purging activities The water sample will be collected from either a
dedicated down-hole pump or disposable bottom bailer Use of this equipment precludes the
potential for cross contamination The sample will be sealed in an appropriate sampling container
depending upon the type of testing to be conducted For example, if volatile organic compound
I testing is required, the sample will be sealed in 40-m1 VOA vials with Teflon septa lined lids The
vials will be completely filled so that no head space exists between the sample and the lids
Different containers may be required depending upon the type of testing to be completed Consult
the project specific WP or SAP for specifics
■
SA8 HA5P SOP9
Revised February 1994 1 EiVWRONMENTAL AUDIT INC
