Box 9300; MS 48
Minneapolis, MN 55440-9300
REQUEST FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION
Thank you for submitting the Results of Soils Investigation for the molasses feed product
facility on Port Road 8, Stockton. The report documents that elevated concentrations of
nitrogen products are present in the soil throughout a majority of the facility. Total nitrogen
levels in the soil increase with depth, and the facility is underlain by shallow groundwater,
encountered at 6.5 feet below ground surface.
As discussed during our 3 May meeting, the Board is concerned about the potential impact to
groundwater. Therefore, by 1 August 1996, please submit a workplan for the installation
and sampling of a minimum of three shallow monitoring wells at the Port Road 8 facility.
I understand that building demolition activities will occur within the next 45-60 days, and
that you would like to remove the top foot of soil at that time. This is acceptable; please
include a discussion of the activity in the workplan. Further remediation (removal of
additional soil, paving, etc.) will be dependant upon the results of the groundwater sampling.
If you have any questions, or would like to arrange a meeting with the Port to discuss the
-installation of wells, I can be reached at (916) 255-3104.
I
WENDY WYELS
Ag Regulatory Unit
cc: Mr. Jack Holm, Cargill, Stockton
Ms. Charlene Wall, Stockton Port District, Stockton
Mr. John Rapp, Sierra Pacific Groundwater Consultants, El Dorado Hills
Mr. Mike Infurna, San Joaquin.County Environmental Health, Stockton
