L
SOIL SAMPLING WORK PLAN
LCARGILL FEED PRODUCT FACILITY
PORT ROAD NO. 8, STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA 95203
LSIERRA-PACIFIC PROJECT NO. 95-128.01
1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
f Cargill, Inc. (Cargill) has authorized Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. (Sierra-
Pacific) to conduct a soils investigation at their facility located at Port Road No. 8, Stockton,
California (Figures 1 and 2). Cargill is responding to a request from the Central Valley
Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) to investigate the site.
The objective of the investigation is to delineate the extent of contamination and determine if
feed products in soil have the potential to impact ground-water quality. Cattle feed products
containing urea, ammonium polyphosphate, and other nitrogen-bearing agricultural chemical
Lproducts are blended and processed at the facility. Molasses-based feed products contain
nitrogen compounds which can degrade ground water quality if present in sufficient
concentrations.
L A preliminary site tour was conducted to determine sample locations. Discolored soils and
staining were observed during the tour and indicate that feed products are present in the soil
adjacent to, and perhaps beneath, some of the above ground tanks at the facility. Samples will
L be obtained from these areas and areas of the property that are known or suspected to be
problematic.
L
L
LSierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 1
L
