In general, the wastewater treatment plant was clean
and well maintained. A site inspection photograph log is enclosed with this letter. The following
observations were made during the site inspection:
• All winery wastewater is discharged.to floor drains. The wastewater is piped to the wastewater
sumps where solids are settled prior to pumping wastewater to the land application areas.
• Stormwater is discharged to the treatment sumps where it is pumped to the land application areas.
• Land application is controlled by manually opening valves to direct the wastewater to portions of
the cropland. Approximately 20 acres of cropland is available as land application area. The land
application area was ripped in 1994.
• Volunteer weeds grow in the application areas. Weeds are occasionally mowed and the cuttings
are left in the field.
• Distribution of the wastewater is by flooding. Wastewater is generally applied for approximately
two weeks at a time.
• Delicato Vineyards operates a regenerative water softener(ion exchange treatment unit) to treat
boiler feed water. The brine from the regenerative water softener is discharged to the treatment
sump.
• Slight odor was noted at the treatment sumps and in the land application areas actively receiving
wastewater.
• No groundwater monitoring wells exist at the land application area.
As discussed during the site inspection, monitoring wells are a standard requirement for wineries
discharging wastewater to land application areas. By 19 February 2001, Delicato shall submit a
groundwater monitoring well installation workplan. The workplan shall be consistent with the attached
document, "Items to be Included in a Groundwater Monitoring Installation Workplan and a Monitoring
Well Installation Report of Results. "
California Environmental Protection Agency
Q*Recycled Paper
