k` i KLEINFELDER
An employxe owned company
File No. 20-4535-O1.REP
June 3, 2004
Mr. Rick Enos
Delicato Vineyards
12001 South Highway 99
Manteca, California 95336
RE: LETTER
ABANDONMENT AND REPLACEMENT OF MW-2
DELICATO FAMILY VINEYARDS
MANTECA, CALIFORNIA
Dear Mr. Enos:
In accordance with Delicato Family Vineyards (Delicato) request, we have prepared this
correspondence to be forwarded to the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) to
address the abandonment and replacement of MW-2. It is our opinion that MW-2, located north
of the southern wastewater check, should be abandoned due to damage, which precludes the
usefulness of the well as a viable monitoring well. MW-2 had become damaged by heavy
equipment operating in the area. In an attempt to complete the well abandonment and
replacement before the end of the second quarter, Delicato respectfully requests that these tasks
be allowed to be undertaken without the usual preparation of a workplan and review process, but
instead use this letter as a record for requesting abandonment and replacement. The replacement
and abandonment of MW-2 will be detailed in the subsequent quarterly groundwater monitoring
report. The monitoring well will be abandoned in accordance with the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department(EHD)requirements.
An EHD well destruction permit will be prepared prior to commencing field work. The
monitoring well will be over-drilled with a drilling rig equipped with a guide bit positioned over
the existing well casing. The total depth of the over-drilled boring will be approximately 40 feet
below the ground surface. (The existing total depth of MW-2 is approximately 40-feet). To the
furthest extent possible, the PVC well casing will be removed form the borehole. The boring
will be grouted to the surface with a neat cement mixture via tremmie pipe to the surface. The
grout will be pumped through the tremmie pipe to the bottom of the boring and allowed to fill the
boring from the bottom-up and flow to the surface.
A replacement well will be installed near the abandoned well location. The new well will be
drilled and installed in a similar fashion as the original well (reference Kleinfelder's workplan for
the installation of the original MW-2, dated February 13, 2001).
C20-4535-01.REP/ST04L311 Pagel of 3
Copyright 2004,Kleinfelder,Inc.
