The source of these chlorinated compounds
is presumably located within Lincoln Center, as previously discussed.
Significant residual soil contamination has not been identified based on
previous investigation at the site which has included seven soil borings
(converted to Wells MW-1 through MW-7), seven soil samples
(collected from beneath the former USTs), and seven soil vapor probes
(VP-1 through VP-7). To further investigate the potential for residual
contamination, three soil borings are proposed in the area of the
former piping, one soil boring is proposed between the existing UST's
and Well MW-2, and one well is proposed downgradient of Well MW-
2. The amount of subsurface investigation appears to be satisfactory
based on the minimal hydrocarbon impact and given the extent of the
dissolved chlorinated plume that occurs regionally ih the area.
2. Although hydrocarbons beneath the UST's removed in 1986 were not
observed in soil samples collected from Wells MW-1 and MW-3, the
vertical and horizontal extent of hydrocarbons is not defined.
The lack of hydrocarbons detected in soil samples collected beneath
and around the UST's suggest that any leak that may have occurred
was minimal. This interpretation is based on the results of six soil
samples collected from beneath the tanks and soil samples collected
from the borings for Wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-6. In soil samples
collected from directly beneath the tanks, TPH-g was detected in only
two of the six samples (samples 1B and 3B) at concentrations of 84
and 1.7 parts per million (ppm), respectively. Hydrocarbons were not
detected in the soil samples collected from the borings for
Wells MW-1, MW-3, and MW-6. These soil samples were collected
at depths ranging from 15 to 55 feet (see Figure 4 of the CAP
revision).
Based on this data, the lateral and vertical extent of hydrocarbons
beneath the UST appear adequately defined. Soil samples 2A, 2B, and
3A-collected from beneath the tanks and soil samples collected from
the borings for Wells MW-3 and MW-6 define the lateral extent of
hydrocarbons. Soil samples collected from the borings for
Wells MW-1, MW-3 and MW-6 define the vertical extent of
hydrocarbons. The absence of hydrocarbons in these areas can be
explained by: (1) what appears to be an extremely limited older
32013 570CAPLET.DOC.doc
