Highway 99)
Ripon, California
San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD) has reviewed analytical
results for groundwater samples collected in July 2004 and monitoring-well groundwater
levels at the above-referenced site; soil lithology at this site; and analytical data collected
at the adjacent Ripon Farm Services site where soil vapor extraction (SVE) and an in-situ
air sparging system were in operation intermittently from November 2000 through
November 2004. Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) recommends that a soil
vapor extraction system(SVE) and, potentially, an air sparging program be implemented
at Jimco Truck Plaza as an interim remediation measure to mitigate soil impacted with
benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX), and methyl tertiary-butyl ether
(MTBE).
EHD approves a soil vapor extraction pilot study at Jimco Truck Plaza after observing a
significant mass reduction of BTEX, total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline, total
petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel, MTBE, di-isopropyl ether, and tertiary butyl alcohol
that apparently resulted from the soil vapor extraction operation at Ripon Farrns Services
(RFS). However, the SVE system must be designed based on the site lithology at Jimco
Truck Plaza, which appears to have a higher proportion of fine-grained soil compared to
the RFS site. EHD also recommends that you assess this site and, if appropriate, conduct
an in-situ air sparging pilot study also. Please submit a work plan to EHD for the SVE
pilot study and, if appropriate, an air sparging system by March 25, 2005.
Further investigation to assess the vertical extent of impacted soil and groundwater in the
location of the former underground storage tanks, and the lateral extent of impacted
groundwater west of monitoring wells MW-8 and MW-9 should be conducted
concurrently with the proposed work. A corrective action plan may be submitted after
the site assessment has been completed. Please submit a work plan to EHD by March 25,
2005, that will address the additional vertical and lateral delineations.
