3.5 Laboratory Analysis of Soil and Water Samples
Two soil samples and one water sample were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons
(TPH as gasoline) and volatile aromatics (BTE&X) in accordance with EPA methods
8015m, 8020 and 602.
4.0 FINDINGS
4.1 Stratigraphy
Silt and fine-grained sand predominate at the site. The boring penetrated clayey to sandy
silt from the surface to a depth of 20 feet. Moderately sorted sand to clayey-sandy silt was
encountered from 20 feet to the bottom of the boring (25 feet). The Boring Log describes
the soils encountered and is included in Appendix A.
4.2 Soil Samples
No hydrocarbon odors or volatile organic vapors were noted in soil samples from boring
MW-1. No TPH or BTE&X were detected in the two soil samples that were analyzed
(Table 2). The laboratory report and chain-of-custody are included in Appendix B.
TABLE 2
ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL and WATER SAMPLES
November 1993
mg/kg (soil), µg/L (water)
Sample TPH as Ethyl-
ID Gasoline Benzene Toluene benzene Xylene
M W 1-10 ND ND ND ND ND
MW 1-15 ND ND ND ND ND
MW-1111-19-93 ND ND 0.64 ND 0.89
mglkg = parts perm on ppm
µg/L = Parts per billion (ppb)
ND = None Detected
4.3 Groundwater Contamination
Toluene and Xylenes were detected in the water sample collected from monitoring well
MW-1 (Table 2).
