The technical memorandum discusses the results of the
analyses of soil and ground water samples collected to help support the selection of
possible ground water volatile organic compound alternative treatment technology pilot
studies at DDJC-Sharpe.
DDJC-Sharpe is proposing an emulsified oil injection pilot study for the Trichloroethene
(TCE) plume in the North Balloon near monitoring well (MW) MW456. Emulsified oil
was selected as the treatment technology in the North Balloon due to evidence of
microbial degradation and the limiting carbon and hydrogen sources for biotic natural
degradation.
The second treatment technology pilot study proposed at DDJC-Sharpe is in-situ
chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate in the South Balloon. In-situ
chemical oxidation in the South Balloon is proposed for the area surrounding MW418.
The South Balloon was selected over the Central Area because the TCE contamination
is shallower and the pilot study drilling costs would be less for treating a shallower area.
Additionally, the South Balloon hotspot is farther from the site boundary and has more
down gradient monitoring wells than the Central Area allowing added performance
monitoring of the chemical oxidant.
I$ Printed on Recycled Paper
