WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS - 2 -
DEFENSE
2 -DEFENSE DISTRIBUTION REGION WEST SHARPE
INTERIM GROUND WATER CLEANUP SYSTEM
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
5. The current treatment system (North and South Balloon areas) consists of two separate ground
water extraction systems, individual air stripping towers and effluent piping to the outfall structure.
A polyphosphate compound is added, in very low concentrations, to the extracted ground water
prior to treatment to reduce scaling in the air strippers. The Report of Waste Discharge describes
the effluent as follows:
Monthly Average Flow: 0.576 million gallons per day (mgd)
Design Flow 1.152 mgd
Average Temperature: 21.5 'C summer; 20°C winter
Constituent Constituent
Nitrate 0.027 mg/l Beryllium 20.0 µg/1
Sulfate 42.0µg/1 Chromium (total) 80.0µg/1
Iron 800.0µg/1 Copper 20.0 4g/1
Magnesium 67.0 mg/1 Selenium < 3.0µg/1
Arsenic 48.0 4g/1 Thallium < 100.0 4g/1
Zinc 60.0µg/1
6.
