The work plan discusses the proposed pilot study
for in-situ chemical oxidant injections of a solid potassium permanganate (KMnO4)
combined with hydraulic fracturing in order to oxidize remaining volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) for source area mass located in the saturated zone at
DDJC-Sharpe.
The in-situ chemical oxidant fieldwork will be conducted in the area of highest
Trichloroethene (TCE) ground water concentrations in the South Balloon, within a
20-foot-thick geologic horizon, ranging from 45 to 65 feet below ground surface (bgs).
The work plan proposes twelve cone penetrometer test (CPT) locations up-gradient
from monitoring well (MW) MW418B in an area with the highest TCE concentrations.
Once the pilot study boundary is determined by comparing Phase 1 CPT analytical
results with previous (CPT 1063) concentrations and lithology data, three additional
CPT locations (Phase II CPTs) will be used to establish baseline contaminants of
concern and metal concentrations for the pilot study.
The pilot study fieldwork also includes the installation of two temporary down/cross-
gradient monitoring wells, MW312B and MW313B, screened in B-zone sands
approximately 40 feet from the selected hydraulic fracturing location to refine the pilot
9 Printed on Recycled Paper
