The summary report characterizes the vertical and
horizontal extent of saline ground water beneath the depot and in off-site areas, and
identifies observed sources of brackish ground water near the site to determine whether
DDJC ground water extraction activities might be affecting a brackish ground water front
to the west and potentially underneath the DDJC-Sharpe site. In addition, the report
evaluates whether ground water in the area qualifies for non-beneficial use classification
due to ground water salinity and exceedances of other water quality parameters.
DDJC-Sharpe decided to investigate ground water salinity beneath the site and within
the vicinity of the Sharpe site due to a known saline ground waterfront characterized by
ground water containing chloride and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in concentrations in
excess of 300 milligrams per litre (mg/L) and 1,000 mg/L, respectively. The saline front
was shown to be encroaching the Stockton and Lathrop areas from the west with the
potential to impact and potentially degrade potable water beneath DDJC-Sharpe.
Preliminary studies conducted by the Department of Water Resources, City of Lathrop,
United States Army Corps of Engineers, and United States Geological Survey (USGS)
have not sufficiently delineated the horizontal or vertical front of the saline front.
DDJC-Sharpe has agreed to share its ground water analysis results with the USGS.
® Printed on Recycled Paper
