4. The in-situ treatment technologies are well described individually, but it is not clear what
criteria will be used to select the technologies for the two pilot studies and what criteria
will be used to decide if monitored natural attenuation will or will not be a feasible
remedial alternative. Having clearly explained criteria for selecting technologies may be
useful to allow all stakeholders to follow the strategies that will be used to evaluate and
select a remedial alternatives. Please explain (e.g., in a decision logic tree) how it will be
determined which remedial technologies will be selected for the two pilot studies and if
monitored natural attenuation will be a feasible remedial alternative.
SPECIFIC COAMENTS
1. Table 1-2,Page 9: The Data Quality Objectives (DQOs) for hydraulic conductivity state
that this parameter is important for ozone sparging, but none of the technology
descriptions in Section 1.4 of the text mention ozone sparging. Please clarify which
technology uses ozone sparging or replace it with the appropriate technology for this WP.
2. Section 1.4.4,EHCTM Bioremediation Technology,Page 15: It is not clear what
materials the EHCTM comprises, but the text mentions both fibrous organic material and
small zero valent iron particles. Please clarify if EHCTm comprises both organic material
and zero valent iron particles. In addition, please correct the second sentence in this
section that implies perchlorate is an organic compound. Perchlorate is an anion (C104-1)
that contains no carbon and is therefore inorganic.
2
