1 2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION <br /> NAVCOMMSTA Stockton is located on Rough and Ready Island at the west edge of the city <br /> of Stockton in California Stockton is located approximately 350 miles northwest of Los Angeles, 75 <br /> ' miles east-northeast of San Francisco, and 40 miles southeast of Sacramento The location of <br /> NAVCOMMSTA Stockton is shown on Figure 1 <br /> Rough and Ready Island occupies an area of approximately 1,460 acres The island, which is <br /> ' located at the eastern edge of the California Delta, was created at the turn of the century by the <br /> construction of levees and manmade channels The Island is bordered by the Stockton Deep Water <br /> ' Channel to the north and east, and by the Burns Cutoff, to the south and west The western portion <br /> of the island was once a tidal marsh which was extensively filled with waste materials, construction <br /> ' and grading fills, and dredging sediments from the Stockton Deep Water Channel and from Burns <br /> Cutoff <br /> UST 817 B-2 was located on the west side of Building 817-B (base fueling station) and south <br /> of Davis Avenue Building 917 is located immediately south and west of the UST From 1945 to <br /> 1979, various industrial and maintenance operations were performed at the facility and a variety of <br /> ' waste disposal practices were implemented The Navy has conducted recent investigations <br /> at the facility to assess the potential environmental impacts resulting from these operations and <br /> disposal practices <br /> Under the Navy's abandoned tank program, abandoned fuel tank 817 B-2 at NAVCOMMSTA <br /> ' Stockton was excavated and removed from the site UST 817 B-2 had a capacity of 2,500 gallons <br /> and was used to store leaded gasoline Results of preliminary soil sampling after tank removal <br /> ' indicate the presence of high levels of contaminants in the soil at the site Table 1 presents soil <br /> analytical results from the removal of UST No 817 B-2 <br /> CrO162 HSP <br /> 0440162urATR1-05x05/93 4 <br />
