' 3.0 DESCRIPTION OF SITE ACTIVITIES AND ASSOCIATED HAZARDS
In the first phase of the remedial investigation, PRC will conduct field screening soil gas
sampling using GeoprobeP sampling equipment Using information from the first phase, the second
' phase of the investigation will consist of soil borings and ground-water monitoring well installation to
fully characterize site contaminant distribution and aquifer hydraulic properties
1
3.1 Soil Gas Sampling
PRC will use field analytical screening to help guide the remedial investigation at UST 817
' B-2 The field screening features a mobile hydraulic sampling system (Geoprobe®) complemented by
a laboratory-grade gas chromatograph and headspace analyzer The GeoprobO uses a hydraulic press
' and hammer to drive 1-inch or 2-inch diameter sample collection devices The potential chemical
hazards during this task include inhalation and dermal contact with the contaminated material The
' hazards associated with this activity are viewed as being low risk Airborne concentrations of organic
and inorganic compounds from the soil at this site are expected to be below OSHA Permissible
Exposure Levels (PELs), and Immediately Dangerous for Life and Health concentrations (IDLH)
' Personnel will use a Photoionization Detector (PID), Organic Vapor Analyzer (OVA), or a
Combustible Gas Indicator (CGI), to assess organic vapor concentrations Appropriate safety
' precautions, in addition to the selection and use of proper level of protection will be followed at all
times It is anticipated that D level personal protection will be sufficient to protect the personnel who
will be performing this activity
3.2 SOIL SAMPLING
1
Three soil borings will be drilled within the immediate vicinity of the tank excavation to a
' depth of approximately 20 feet below ground surface (bgs ) An additional five soil borings will be
drilled, based on field screening data, also to a depth of approximately 20 feet bgs Soil samples will
' be collected at a minimum of 5 foot intervals in all boreholes All of the borings will be completed
as monitoring wells
CT0162 HSP
0$"162UTATRI-05/05193 6
