' DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURES
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Reducing the spread of contamination is the responsibility of each individual engaged in on-
site activities One way of reducing the spread of contamination is by using a PDS, in which a
hotline and a zone of exclusion are set up Personnel move from the contaminated area (hot zone),
' over the hotline, through the decontamination zone, and into a support zone The PDS will be used
while the level of personal protective equipment is Level C or above
When the decontamination line is no longer required, contaminated wash and rinse solutions
' and contaminated disposable articles will be contained and disposed of as hazardous wastes in
compliance with state and federal regulations All disposable items will be placed in two plastic bags
' (double bagged) and drummed Decontamination of non disposable items is discussed in the Quality
Assurance Project Plan (QAP,IP)
' The possibility exists for personnel to become contaminated no matter what precautions are
taken Thus, provisions should be made to decontaminate personnel on site The general guidelines
below will be followed by PRC personnel while on site
• At the end of each work period, personnel coming off site and through the
contamination reduction area will wash their face and hands This is the last step of
' the decontamination procedure
• A basin of Alconox (or other detergent) and water will be set up and used only if
personnel become contaminated through direct contact While Alconox is a strong
detergent, it is safe enough to be used on skin In addition, sufficient water will be
provided for dousing any worker who may be contaminated over his or her whole
body
' • When facilities are available, workers will shower at the end of the work shift
' PRC personnel will be wearing the appropriate personal level of protection based on site-
specific hazard identification and evaluation procedures for the activities at each hazardous waste site
' The maximum decontamination procedures for B and C levels of protection are listed below Specific
procedures and the sequence of events will be determined on a site-specific basis based on the
G - I
1
