Safety Practices for Drill Rig Operations <br /> ' In addition, the following precautions shall be adhered to by the drill ng <br /> operator <br /> ' 1 Before raising the drill ng mast in the vicinity of <br /> electncal power lines, the operator shall walk completely around the <br /> ' drill ng to determine the distance of the rig to the nearest power line <br /> when the mast is being raised (which should be greater than 20 <br /> feet) Any questions regarding the appropriateness of a drilling <br /> ' location should be brought to the attention of the On-site Safety <br /> Coordinator <br /> 2 Before drilling begins, the location must be adequately <br /> cleaned and leveled to accommodate the dnll ng <br /> t3 Housekeeping Suitable storage for all tools, materials, <br /> and supplies shall be provided Pipe, dnll rods, casings, augers and <br /> similar drilling tools shall be stacked in an orderly manner to prevent <br /> ' rolling, spreading, or sliding <br /> 4 Work areas and drilling platforms shall be kept free of <br /> materials, obstructions, and substances that could cause a surface <br /> to become slick or otherwise hazardous <br /> ' 5 After stabilizing and leveling the dnll rig, all <br /> unnecessary personnel should be cleared from the area immediately <br /> ' to the rear and the sides of the drill mast before it is raised <br /> 6 Augers shall be used consistent with manufacturer's <br /> ' recommended methods of securing the auger to the power coupling <br /> Additionally, the operator and tool handler shall establish a safe <br /> system of responsibilities for the drilling, auger connecting and <br /> ' disconnecting, and auger fork insert/removal <br /> 7 Augers shall only be cleaned when the drill ng is in <br /> ' neutral and the auger has ceased to rotate <br /> 8 Unattended boreholes must be properly covered, or <br /> ' otherwise protected <br /> A-8 <br />
