Hydrocarbons Sod samples collected from a backhoe, the ground or a sod coring
device, should be collected in a thin-walled stainless steel or brass cylinder at least
three inches long by one inch in diameter, that has been prepared by the
laboratory doing the analysis or the project consultant (cylinders can be made to fit
inside the preferred split-barrel core sampler) About one inch of sod should be
removed from the immediate surface area where the sample is to be taken and the
cylinder then pounded into the soil with a wooden mallet No headspace should
1 be present in the cylinder once the sample is collected When the sample is
collected, each end of the cylinder should be covered with aluminum foil and then
capped with a polyethylene lid, taped, and labeled
Sample Preservation and Handling
1
The following section specifics sample containers, preservation methods, and
sample handling procedures
Sample Containers and Preservation
' Sample containers vary with each type of analytical parameter Container types
and materials will be selected to be non-reactive with the particular analytical
parameter tested
Sample Handling
' Sample containers will be labeled immediately following collection Samples will
be kept cold (4°C) with cold packs until received by the laboratory Cold packs will
' be replaced each day to maintain refrigeration At the time of sampling, each
sample will be logged on a Sampling and Analysis Chain-of-Custody Record (see
Figure 5) that will accompany the sample to the laboratory Temperature of
' sample will be recorded at time of receipt by the laboratory
Samples will be transferred from the site to a state-certified laboratory by the
sampling team Sample shipments from Western Oil & Spreading and Associates,
Inc to laboratones performing the selected analyses routinely occur within 24
hours of sample receipt The laboratory manager will check the holding times for
requested analyses so that they are not exceeded Soil sample for hydrocarbons
shall be handled in accordance with the California State Water Resources Control
' Board LUFT Field Manual, 1989 Revision, Appendix C (LUFT Field Manual)
incorporated with the following
' C-6
