Box 8303
Stockton, CA 95208 ` o
Subject: Second Quarter 2001 Monitoring Report a C
Gillies Trucking Yard r-
3931 Newton Road y. p
Stockton,CA
Dear Mr. Gillies:
.c-
cn The purpose of this letter is to transmit the results of the groundwater monitoring activities that =
took place during the second.calendar quarter at 3931 Newton Road. Because monitoring was
limited to the two domestic wells at 3931 and 3851 Newton road, we have not prepared a full
monitoring report.
At his request,I met with Mr.Jeff Wong of San Joaquin County PHS/EHD at your site on July 3
to collect a water sample from each of the domestic wells. When I arrived at the site, I noted that
some.of the groundwater monitoring wells had been located and the gravel had been cleared to
allow access to the well, but other wells were still buried and I therefore postponed monitoring or
sampling the wells until all of them have been exposed.I allowed the two domestic wells to flow
for approximately 15 minutes before collecting a sample from the tap in a 1-liter amber bottle.
The two samples_were placed in a cooled ice chest and later transported to Excelchem Analytical
Laboratory in Roseville. They were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the diesel
range, and the laboratory report is attached. Diesel Was not detected in either sample.
We also reviewed the letter from Mr. Wong to you, dated June 21, 2001, in which he requested
that a pumping test be conducted before July 31,2001. We have since spoken to Mr. Wong and
explained why such a test would not be appropriate at this time. Presently, there is less than 5
feet of groundwater in the contaminated aquifer, which has a small areal extent and would
rapidly go dry under pumping test conditions. In recent monitoring events,we have found that
the well goes dry after only a few minutes of purging, implying that an extremely slow pumping
rate would be required to prevent this from happening during a pumping test. Pumping at such a
slow rate would not be an effective method of remediating the groundwater contamination at
your site, and would be a very slow process requiring several years. Mr. Wong has asked us to
investigate alternative treatment methods prior to the meeting that he has scheduled for August.
Si ere
Victor B.
