Honorable Richard Pombo
Member of Congress
Regarding Gillies Trucking
Page 2 of
The water supply well (G-1) on the site represents another outstanding
concern. Water samples collected from the well in the past have shown the
presence of hydrocarbon contaminants. Although samples collected in recent
years have not shown detectable hydrocarbon concentrations, the only
groundwater sample collected and analyzed near G-1 during the recent
investigation was impacted by the contaminants of concern. To minimize the
risk posed by and to this well, the EHD has directed that a video survey of the
well be performed, and that the well be destroyed and replaced with a well
designed to meet current construction standards. Mr. Ken Gillies has agreed
to these actions at several meetings since 2001, and has included them in a
work plan submitted to this office. However, the video log has not been
provided nor has the water supply well been destroyed and replaced.
Please be assured that the EHD does not desire to keep this case open any longer than
necessary or cause any unnecessary expenditure of private or public funds investigating
this site. As soon as Mr. Gillies fulfills the directives issued to him and his site has been
demonstrated to pose an acceptable level of risk to human health and safety, sensitive
receptors and groundwater supplies, the EHD will forward Mr. Gillies' closure request to
the CVRWQCB with a recommendation for CVRWQCB concurrence with site closure.
Sincerely,
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Nuel C. Henderson, Jr. Margareagorio,ARETS
Registered Geologist, Unit IV Supervisor, Unit IV
cc: Mr. Ken Gillies—Gillies Trucking
James L.L. Barton — CVRWQCB
Victor Cherven—UEC
Mark Owens—State Cleanup Fund
Mr. David Irey, Esq. — District Attorney's Office, San Joaquin County
