Muir, Consulting
Geologist & Geophysicist (Muir). RSG details a sampling event that occurred on February 25 and
26, 2015 and contains analytical data from eleven selected groundwater monitoring wells and from
soil collected beneath the base of a former waste oil underground storage tank (UST) at the subject
site. The data was collected to evaluate background concentrations of dissolved metals, evaluate
current concentrations in groundwater of total hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-d) from selected
monitoring wells to determine acceptable methods of well destruction, and to determine if there is
evidence of a historical release from the former onsite waste oil UST.
In previous groundwater samples from GT-16A and GT-31, collected in November 2013, the metals
cadmium and zinc were detected. At that time, the origin of these metals could not be ascertained
as being related to the former waste oil UST. During the February 2015 sampling event, particulates
were filtered out of groundwater samples in the field by Muir. According to RSG, GT-16A was not
sampled because the well was dry. Dissolved zinc in groundwater monitored by GT-31 was
reported at a concentration of 16.6 micrograms per liter(ug/L) and dissolved cadmium was reported
as non-detect (<1 ug/L). In groundwater monitored by the other ten monitoring wells sampled in
February 2015, cadmium was reported as non-detect (<1 ug/L) and zinc was reported in four wells
at a maximum concentration of 26.8 ug/L. Soil samples collected beneath the former waste oil UST
were reported as non-detect for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), oil and grease, volatile organic
compounds (VOCs), semi-volatile organic compounds, TPH-diesel, and TPH-gasoline. Reported
metal concentrations in the soil samples were below background concentrations typical of
Californian soil. At this time, there is no substantial evidence indicating a release from the former
waste oil UST. The EHD has determined this case is eligible for closure.
In RSG, Muir included updated groundwater monitoring well and SVE well abandonment
(destruction) recommendations. Muir provided initial destruction recommendations in Workplan for
Well Abandonment, Gillies Trucking Site dated July 12, 2014, which was included in Case Closure
Summary And No Further Action Request Volume 3 dated August 2014. After review of the
February 2015 TPH-d groundwater data, the EHD will allow the following 8 monitoring wells to
