UPg radien#Environmental C&sultants
January 10,2003
Mr.Nuel Henderson, RG
San Joaquin County EHD
304 E. Webber
Stockton,CA 95201
Subject: Gillies Trucking
3931 Newton Road
Stockton,CA
Dear Mr. Henderson:
The purpose of this letter is to request your approval to destroy and remove monitoring well GT-2
at Gillies Trucking.A well destruction permit and destruction fee are enclosed.
This well became unusable on January 3,when a Grundfos purge pump became stuck in the well
during quarterly monitoring activities. Before and during purging,a small amount of surface
glavel fell into the well casing and may have become lodged between the pump and the casing,
because attempts to free the pump have been unsuccessful. At the present time, the pump is stuck
at a depth of between 50 and 60 feet and is above the static water level.Despite repeated attempts
on January 6 and 9,we have been unable to push the pump to the bottom of the well or remove it.
As the well is located in an area of heavy truck traffic, the well cannot be allowed to remain open
and unprotected for an extended period of time. We propose to overdrill the well with 10"augers,
which will destroy the grout seal but may leave the PVC casing relatively undamaged. If the
casing can then be pulled from the borehole, it may be possible to retrieve the pump without
destroying it.This is clearly the best solution, because the well cannot be sampled or monitored in
its present condition. After destruction, the borehole will be filled with cement grout.
In your written correspondence dated November 26,2002,you have requested further drilling and
other assessment work at this site.A work plan to address that request is currently being prepared,
and it is likely that the additional drilling will take place during the second quarter of 2003. The
results of that work may indicate whether GT-2 should be replaced or whether additional wells
are warranted. Therefore,we are not proposing to replace the well at this time, but will consider
this issue after the next phase of drilling has been completed.
We request your immediate attention to this issue so that we can schedule the destruction as soon
as possible.
Sincere y,
Y al
..
Victor B. Cherven,Ph.D.
Principal Geologist
Cc: Ken Gillies
Stockton: P.O. Box 8002, Stockton, CA 95208 (209) 772-3620
(530) 677-3055
Cameron Park: 3369 Kimberly Road, Cameron Park, CA 95682
