Step 1 — NOTIFY <br />When the acting Emergency Coordinator becomes aware of an emergency involving <br />hazardous waste, he/she shall notify all affected personnel. If the emergency requires <br />evacuation of all or part of the facility, the EC shall sound the appropriate alarms and direct all <br />personnel to the nearest exit. <br />If the E.C. determines that the emergency requires response from an Emergency Services <br />Provider, he/she shall promptly notify the appropriate agency. <br />Step 2 — IDENTIFY <br />Once the appropriate notification have been made, the Emergency Coordinator shall identify <br />the details of the hazardous waste emergency as follows: <br />Type: What material(s) is(are) involved in the emergency? <br />Character: What is the nature of the emergency? Is it a fire, explosion, release or <br />spill? <br />Source: What is the source of the waste? What container(s) is(are) involved, and <br />where are they located? <br />Amount: What is the approximate amount of the waste involved in the emergency? <br />Extent: What is the areal extent of the emergency, what portion(s) of the facility <br />is(are) involved? Are areas outside the facility threatened? <br />To this end, the EC may refer to documentation pertaining to the waste product; container <br />labeling, Material Safety Data Sheets, HAZMAT Plan, Emergency Hotlines, etc... <br />Step 3 — EVALUATE <br />Once the above information is collected, the Emergency Coordinator must evaluate the <br />potential impact of the emergency on human health and the environment. The attached <br />emergency response sheets assist with this evaluation. If the E.C. determines that the <br />emergency requires response from an Emergency Services Provider, he/she shall promptly <br />notify the appropriate agency. <br />The E.C. must also determine if the emergency poses a threat to human health or the <br />environment outside of the facility, he/she shall immediately notify local Emergency Providers <br />and work with them to determine whether local areas should be evacuated. <br />3 <br />
