respect to site-specific natal oxidant demand is presented %OTable D.
The results of these calculations are summarized on Figure 2. As seen
from the calculations, ISCO treatment time (ozone only) for natural
oxidant demand is estimated to be approximately 5 years for the pilot
test area and 12 years for the source area.
The total ISCO treatment time is the addition of the hydrocarbon and
natural oxidant demand. Safety factor ranging from 2 to 10 is typically
applied to the stoichiometric estimate for the design of in-situ
remedial technologies.
Therefore, the total ISCO treatment time for the pilot test area ranges
from 19 years (without safety factor) to as high as 145 years (with
safety factor of 10) , and the source area treatment time ranges from 33
years (without safety factor) to as high as 217 years (with safety
factor of 10) .
Application of a groundwater extraction system was evaluated based on
the estimated mass in the source area, expected phase-transfer rate, and
expected groundwater extraction rate. The detailed calculations are
provided in Table E (Groundwater Extraction System Evaluation) . Based
on ETIC Engineering's past experience with the operation of
groundwater extraction systems for remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons
in the subsurface, a 18 phase-transfer rate is typically expected. A
groundwater extraction rate of 10 gallons per minute was assumed for
this calculation. As seen from the calculations, the estimated time to
remove approximately 18,500 lb of petroleum hydrocarbon mass would
require operation of groundwater extraction system for at least 145
years.
Based on these assessments, along with the results of future drilling
activities, a potential remedial alternative will be proposed under a
separate cover.
Please call if you have questions or need additional information.
Thanks,
Ted
Ted Moise
Senior Project Manager
ETIC Engineering, Inc.
2285 Morello Avenue
Pleasant Hill, CA 94523
Phone: (925) 602-4710 (X 23)
Fax: (925) 602-4720
TMoise@eticeng.com
2
