r
APPENDIX A
PROTOCOLS FOR WELL DRILLING,COMPLETION,
DEVELOPMENT,AND SAMPLING
A.1 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
The boreholes were drilled with a B-61 truck-mounted rotary rig using W-inch outside diameter
hollow-stem,continuous-flight augers. The boreholes were drilled 20 feet below static water
level.
t
All augers, sampling rods, samplers, and downhole equipment were steam cleaned before drilling
and between each new well. All drill cuttings were piled on a plastic sheet and covered with
w Plastic on-site,waiting for the results of chemical analysis and appropriate disposal if necessary.
Logs of drilling and the borehole were recorded by an EA gcolog:st overseeing the drilling
operations and well installation. The boring logs are signed and dated and contain detailed
( `~ geologic information, including descriptions of the soils classified according to the Unified Soil
Classification System, blow counts,OVA readings, moisture content of the soils, and initial and k
static water levels.
A.2 SOIL SAMPLING
' During drilling soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals and at any substantial changes of
soil type,beginning at 10 feet below grouted surface,with a 2-inch-diameter, 18-inch modified '
California split-spoon sampler containing three 6-inch brass liners. The sampler and liners were
t
scrubbed in deionized water and Alconox detergent and rinsed with deionized water after use at
3 each sampling interval. Soil samples were collected to the total depths of the boreholes.
e
At each sampling depth, the sampler was driven 18 inches ahead of the drill augers into undis-
turbed soil. Typically after the sampler was opened, either the lowermost or tYuddle sample liner
was retrieved, and the ends of the tube covered with aluminum foil and sealed with plastic caps.
The soil-filled liner was labeled with the location, sample number, date, time, depth, sampler,
I and borehole number. The samples were placed in zip lock bags and stored in a cooler contain-
ing ice.
s ice' The remaining soil was.removed from the other two liners and scanned with a Foxboro Century
128 organic vapor analyzer(FID). OVA readings are noted on the logs. The soils were de-
+ scribed and classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System.
C :
i
WM942/bdWi A-1
'r
OEM WININE111M I ROOM
