Containing the Lead During .abatement
It is essential to contain lead dust during abatement to prevent the dispersion of lead
into the environment and further lead poisoning.
The following steps must be taken to prevent lead from. spreading into the
environment, and will make clean-up much easier.
Before paint abatement work begins:
• Restrict entr✓ to the work area. Children, pregnant women, and household
pets must always be relocated during abatement. In most instances all family
members are relocated until clean-up is completed. The only time a non-
pregnant adult might remain on-site would be in a case where a replacement
job occurs in one roam. Only workers or other people directly involved in
the project should enter the work area.
• Post warning signs immediately outside all entrances and exits to the work
area.
• Seal off the work area with plastic barriers (see "Lnterior :abatement: How to
Contain the Lead")
During lead abatement work:
• Follow ail worker safety precautions (see "Lead Abatement Worker Safety
Guidelines and Regulations')
• Wear disposable shoe covers to keep from tracking lead dust outside or the
work area. Take booties off when leaving the work area.
• Wear disposable coveralls while or. the job site to keep lead dust from
collecting on r egu!ar clothes. Remove coveralls whenever leaving t e job
site.
• Carefully inspect plastic sheets for :ears every day before beginning .pork.
Repair or recover areas as soon as a tear is noticed.
.-.:ter lead abatement work:
• Follow clean-up procedures.
•
All interior loors should be sealed with oolvurethane, gloss deck enamei, a
Light fitting vinyl loor covering, or an ecuivaiertt ,rnper neacie rr:atenai, it a
smooth cleanable material is not already present.
anterior -abatement
• Remove all furniture and movable items from the work area.
