3. Institute medicai surueillance. <br /> Abatement workers should be monitored by a physician on an on-going oasis <br /> to prevent long-term health eiiects of lead exposure. Medical surveillance <br /> includes regular blood tests for lead and physicals. Appendix H provides <br /> details of medical monitoring of lead-exposed workers. <br /> Standards for Construction and Lead Abatement Workers <br /> Cal-OSHA standards for construction workers apply to lead abatement workers in <br /> California. By law, employers must teach each employee how to recognize and <br /> avoid unsafe conditions. Employers must also teach workers the health and safety <br /> regulations that appiv to their workplace (Construction Safety Order 1510, Title 3, <br /> CAC). <br /> For construc•~on workers, the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for lead is 200 Ug/M3. <br /> To comviv with the PEL, administrative or engineering controls must oe used. <br /> When these controls are not feasible, protective equipent .:rust be used :o keel <br /> m <br /> exposures below the PEL. <br /> Other Laws for Lead Abatement Workers <br /> The Workers' Compensation law may be especially important for lead-exposed <br /> workers. under Workers' Compensation, any employee who has a work-related <br /> i.�tjury or illness is entitled to workers' compensation beneiits, including the costs or <br /> medical care. If an employee cannot work because of a work-related illness or <br /> injurv, he or she is eligible for temporary disability payments, which cover a part or <br /> his or her -sual salary.
