Mr. Eric I Holm
March 26, 1997
Page 3
Based on types of the activities conducted, soil gas and/or soil sampling
are needed in the following areas:
(a) The area adjacent to and beneath the"Cement Mixing"and
"Cement Application"area. Soil samples should be collected in
this area in addition to soil gas; and
(b) The area beneath the laboratory and at its sewer discharge point
(sinks). Solvents may have been used in Holz's laboratory to test
the composition of the finished products, and/or to clean the
laboratory's glassware.
(3) Building No. 2. Building No. 2 was formerly used as spray booth. An
area within the building is for the "hand-dipping"of adhesives containing
solvents to metals. Based on the types of operations conducted, soil and
soil gas sampling need to be conducted in the following locations to
determine if soils beneath Building No. 2 are contaminated with VOCs,
semi-VOCs, metals, and phenolic compounds:
(a) The area adjacent to and beneath the "hand-dipping" area; and
(b) The area beneath the former spray booth and the floor drains.
Depth-discrete soil gas samples at 10 and 20 feet should be collected in the
above specified areas. Soil gas samples at deeper depth, i.e., 30 feet may
be collected depending on the results of the shallow soil gas samples.
(4) Buildings No. 3 and 4. Buildings No. 3 and 4 comprise the north and
south molding and trimming departments. Manufactured rubbers are
steam pressed into the required forms. A small shot blast furnace is
located near the back end of Building No. 4.
Soil and shallow(10 and 20 feet bgs) soil gas samples should be collected
beneath these two buildings, including the areas beneath the shop blast
furnace to determine the presence of any contamination from on-site
operations and the extent of VOCs migration from the upgradient
locations. Soil samples are collected to determine if the soils are
contaminated with metals, semi-VOCs, and TPH.
