BEM BEMSystemr,rnc.
sv s.eus iec. Project#
Holz Rubber Co.,Inc.
Lodi,California
field-screening to be the most contaminated or, in the absence of evidence of contamination, the
deepest sample collected from each boring.
Soil boring and sampling will be performed under the direction of a California Registered
Professional Engineer or Geologist.
SAMPLE COLLECTION
Soil samples to be submitted for laboratory analysis will be collected by driving a pre-cleaned
brass sample sleeve into the soil at the bottom of the borehole using a slide-hammer sampler.
Brass sleeves containing soil samples will be extracted from the sampling device. The ends of the
brass sleeves will be sealed with Teflon sheets followed by aluminum foil and tight-fitting plastic
caps. The plastic caps will be secured to the ends of the sleeves with chain-of-custody seals. The
brass sample sleeves will be labeled with unique identification numbers, time and date of sample
collection, and the name of the sample collector. Labeled samples will be placed in sealable
plastic bags on ice in coolers, cooled to a temperature of approximately 4°C and preserved.
Samples will be transported in coolers under chain-of-custody via overnight air freight for
laboratory analysis.
SAMPLE ANALYSES
The samples will be submitted to a California Certified analytical laboratory for analysis. Samples
collected from borings in the vicinity of the dip tanks and flammable material storage structure
will be analyzed for CAM 8 metals, pH, and VOCs. Samples collected from between Building 5
and Building 6 will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel and total oil and
grease (TOG). Samples collected from the vicinity of Building 17 will be analyzed for TPH as
diesel and TOG. Samples collected from around Building 16 will be analyzed for VOCs and
TOG.
DECONTAMINATION
All equipment anticipated to contact soil samples will be decontaminated prior to sampling and
between each sampling event. Decontamination will consist of rinsing equipment in tap water to
remove gross contamination followed by washing in distilled water with Alconox°, Liquinoz, or
Citrinox° detergent followed by a distilled water rinse and air drying. Decontaminated sampling
equipment will be placed on clean aluminum foil to air dry. Decontaminated sampling equipment
will be wrapped in clean aluminum foil between sampling events.
INVESTIGATION-DRIVEN WASTE HANDLING
Soil cuttings will be drummed and left on site until the laboratory analytical results are received.
Laboratory analytical results will be used to characterize the cuttings and they will be
subsequently disposed of in an applicable manner. Protective clothing, if any, and latex gloves
used during investigation will be placed in plastic trash bags, and disposed as common refuse.
July 1996 2
g:ladmin1correspU9776sms.doc
