(Aegis), has reviewed the letter, dated August 12, 1993,
from the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division (SJCEHD) to Shell Oil
Company (Shell), regarding the subject site. The letter requests a workplan for an
additional downgradient monitoring well. Aegis has also reviewed groundwater data
from the February 23, 1993, sampling of well MW-8 installed by Exxon in the
sidewalk on the west side of Pershing Avenue.
Monitoring wells MW-1 , MW-2, and MW-3 were installed on the Shell site in
July 1990. Aegis prepared the workplan for the installation of well MW-4 in response
to a letter from the SJCEHD to Shell, dated October 7, 1991 , requesting "repeatable
sampling from a monitoring well downgradient from the probable source." The
location for well MW-4 was then proposed, and was installed in December 1991 after
review and approval of the workplan by the SJCEHD.
The low concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons indicated in the three soil samples
collected from beneath the former product piping does not indicate a potential source
area away from the former tanks. Therefore, well MW-4 was installed approximately
20 feet downgradient from the highest concentrations of hydrocarbons indicated in
the former tank basin,
69-016 Z.LTR
