' FIELD METHODS AND PROCEDURES <br /> FIELD PROCEDURES <br /> The followingsection describes field procedures that will be completed by ENSR personnel in the <br /> performance of the tasks involved with this protect <br /> 1.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN <br /> ' Fieldwork performed by ENSR and subcontractors at the site will be conducted according to <br /> guidelines established in a Health and Safety Plan (HASP) The HASP is a document describing <br /> ' the hazards that may be encountered in the field and specifies protective equipment, work <br /> procedures and emergency information A copy of the HASP will be at the site and available for <br /> reference by appropriate parties during work at the site <br /> 2 0 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING <br /> Soil bonn s and sod samples will be performed under the direction of a qualified ENSR geologist <br /> g p <br /> Sod bonngs will be drilled using a truck-mounted hollow stem auger dnliing ng and 6 to 8 25-inch <br /> diameter hollow stem augers <br /> Sod sampling conducted in accordance with ASTM 1586-84 will use a 2-inch outside-diameter <br /> split-barrel sampler or a 2-inch inside-diameter California-type sampler driven into the soil by a <br /> 140-pound weight falling 30 inches After an initial set of 6 inches, the number of blows required <br /> to drive the sampler an additional 12 inches, known as penetration resistance or the "N" value, is <br /> recorded The "N" value is used as an empirical measure of the relative density of cohesionless <br /> ' soils and the consistency of cohesive soils The sampler is lined with three brass sample tubes, <br /> each 6-inches long and the outside diameter equal to the inside diameter of the sampler <br /> Samples will be collected at 5-foot intervals or as directed by the geologist <br /> All soil samples are examined in the field b a geologist and are described b color, rain size and <br /> p Y g 9 Y g <br /> moisture content and are classified in accordance with the Unified Sod Classification System <br /> visual ana manual method A portion of the Soil saf11l71e I:, Plid-G&-d WILY da pldStlC, bag da-11 U-1 aCdltlU for <br /> headspace analysis of the organic vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID) equipped with a <br /> ' 10 2ev lamp The sod sample collected in the leading brass tube within the California-type <br /> sampler will be labeled, sealed and stored on ice pending sample selection and transport to the <br /> laboratory for analysis Representative portions of the samples will be retained for further <br /> examination and for verification of the field classification Logs of the borings indicating the depth <br /> . and identification of the various strata, the "N" value and pertinent information regarding the <br />
