• Woody commerce stream materials such as discarded pallets,
logging or milling by-products, and forest slash.
The biomass would be chipped in the fields so that at least 90
percent of the biomass would be no more than three inches in nominal
size. It is expected to have a moisture content of 35 to 50 percent by
weight (see Table 2.2) . To avoid odors due to decomposition, putrescible
feedstocks such as fruit, manure, and municipal solid waste would not be
accepted.
The briquetting/pelletizing system equipment is designed for a
maximum input rate of 30 tons per hour (50 percent moisture content - wet
basis) . To obtain the desired ten-day supply, a total volume equivalent
to a single pile 500 feet by 250 feet and 15 feet in height would be
required. However, this volume would be segmented into at least four and
as many as twelve separate piles, depending on the type of biomass avail -
able at any given time during the year. Segmentation of the pile is also
required for pile management and fire control . Feedstock pile management
(by front end loaders) would be on a first-in/first-out basis to elimi-
nate the potential for decomposition, hence eliminating odor and energy
loss.
The raw biomass would be loaded into a Reclaim Hopper and conveyed
to the primary classification station. A single-deck classifying screen
(shaker screen) would be used to separate out oversized chips (i .e. ,
greater than one-half inch in diameter) . The oversize material would be
reduced to the appropriate size by a Hammer Hog. A Magnet would remove
tramp metal which might damage the hog. A belt-type Outfeed Conveyor
would lift the classified biomass to a Splitter that can direct material
to the Dryer Distribution Flight Conveyor at the intake to the Dryers, or
bypass the Dryer and go directly to the Briquetter Feed Hopper. The
Distribution Conveyor would be designed to maintain the Dryer Feed
Hoppers full at all times.
At the base of each Dryer Feed Hopper, a Rotary Airlock Feeder
meters the classified biomass into the dryer intake chute. The Dryers
are triple pass, direct heating, rotary drum type. Induced draft convey-
ing air moves the feedstock the length of the Dryer as the drum rotates.
2-12
I01-46.R5 4/13/89
