Updated Site Conceptual Model and First Quarter 2003 Monitoring and Remediation Report
Cleanu and Abatement Order No 5-00-707 EAI Project No 1232
4,0 REMEDIATION SYSTEM STATUS REPORT
Due to low concentrations of VOCs observed in the extracted soil vapor during the fourth
quarter 2002 quarterly system testing, the oxidizer was operated only 100 hours during the first
quarter 2003 However, the air sparging compressor was operated for approximately 1,000
hours alternatively for one week on the Wards site and then one week on the Unocal site
On March 18, 2003, the oxidizer was restarted to obtained VOC readings from individual vapor
extraction wells using an OVA calibrated to methane and collect soil vapor samples for
quarterly monitoring Soil vapor samples were obtained from the inlet of the oxidizer while
operating separately on Ward and Unocal sites The samples were analyzed for TPH-G,
BTEX, and MTBE by EPA Methods 8015M and 8021B, and for carbon dioxide, methane, and
oxygen by ASTM-D 1946 The field measurement data are compiled in Table 5
The analytical data and chain of custody are presented in Appendix C
The soil vapor sample obtained from the Montgomery site contained 0 3% carbon dioxide
which indicates that hydrocarbons in the subsurface are still subjected to the biodegradation
activity
The soil vapor sample obtained from the Unocal's site contains 0 08 % carbon dioxide which is
a significant reduction from the fourth quarter 2002 (Appendix C)
As required by conditions of the air quality permit, quarterly sampling was performed on
March 18, 2003 No analytes were detected above the detection limit (Appendix C)
Since starting the remedial system, the thermal oxidizer has operated for a total of 6,075 hours
and the sparging compressor for approximately 11,000 hours, removing approximately 8,456
pounds of petroleum hydrocarbons from impacted soil and ground water (see Table 7) The
amount of biodegraded hydrocarbons is not included in this total and is difficult to calculate
It is proposed in the second quarter 2003 to operate the thermal oxidizer alternately for one
week using wells VEW-2, VEW-8, VEW-l0, VEW-12 on the Ward Site and one week using
wells MW-19S, MW-23S, and MW-25S on the Unocal Site The air sparging compressor will
be kept operating on a continuous basis
BHM WORD 1232RO321 -7- ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT; INC o
