Site Background Information: Chapin Brothers Investments,Inc.
amp power service was installed at the site. Subsequently a new power transformer was installed for
the site on 04 June 1997, to prevent the loss of power voltage during peak usage.
AIR-SPARGING SYSTEM INSTALLATION
The existing subsurface network consisted on galvanized steel piping from AS-1 to the remediation
enclosure. Additional IAS injection points, necessary for efficient ground water remediation, were
installed on 19 April 1997.A compressor-based EnviroSparge IAS system was installed at the site
on 24 March 1997. The IAS system delivers 7 to 10 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) at a
pressure of 12 to 15 pounds per square inch; adequate to volatilize the petroleum hydrocarbons in
the ground water and transfer hydrocarbons from the dissolved ground water state into the soil vapor
phase. The EnvioSparge IAS system began full-scale operation on 01 May 1997.
FAILED EXTRACTION SYSTEM: MAINTENANCE/UPGRADES
On 21 July 1997 the 5 horsepower electric motor which serves to power the rotary blower was
removed and delivered to ACE Armature in Stockton. Both motor shaft bearings were replaced and
minor wear to the contacts were repaired. The main rotor shaft was also cleaned and lubricated. The
motor was then replaced on the catalytic oxidation unit(SVE unit).
On 05 August 1997 the M-D Pneumatic 3210 rotary lob blower was removed from a King,
Buck/Hasstech (KBH) catalytic oxidation unit (SVE unit). The unit was delivered to Magdeburg
System (the authorized factory service representative) in South San Francisco, for repairs and
service. The bearings, gaskets and seals were replaced. The blowers exhaust valves and solenoid
valves were rebuilt. The pump was then tested and painted.Major wear was noted to the mechanical
drive shaft bearing and seal(metallic). In the opinion the staff at Magdeburg System this wear was
indicative of excessive use and poor maintenance over a long prior of time.On 27 August 1997,the
blower was installed and the extraction system began operation.
On 16 September 1997 a KBH representative visited the site to correct a manufacturing defect in the
SVE unit.A temperature controller to the oxidation unit was noted to malfunction, falsely indicating
an excessive temperature in the oxidation chamber, and thereby causing the unit to shut down as a
precaution against destruction of the oxidation chamber. A new temperature controller was added
to the SVE unit,by KBH.
SPARGING/EXTRACTION SYSTEM OPERATION AND MONITORING
The IAS/SVE system was monitored daily for the first week of operation and weekly thereafter.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
