Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan <br />Preparedness & Prevention Contingency Plans & Emergency Procedures <br />1. Prevent accidents by having equipment on-site, capable of responding to an emergency, such as <br />telephone and fire suppression equipment. <br />2. Have contingency plans and emergency procedures in place to prepare employees for handling <br />hazardous waste and responding to emergencies. (Examples include Ryder Spill Response <br />Booklets.) <br />3. Designate an Emergency Coordinator for the facility that is on-site or on-call at all times. <br />4. Post the following information next to the telephone: <br />• Name and phone number of Emergency Coordinator. <br />• Location of fire extinguisher and spill control materials. <br />• Fire department's phone number. <br />5. Train employees on proper waste handling and emergency procedures. <br />6. Notify Ryder's Environmental Services and the state, as required, in the event a spill does occur. <br />Spill Reporting <br />In the event of fire or release of hazardous waste to the environment that could threaten human health <br />outside the facility, call the National Response Center (NRC) at 800-424-8802. The NRC will assist in <br />managing the emergency and making the appropriate notifications. <br />Actions to take (see also the Spill Control Procedures): <br />In case of fire: <br />- Extinguish if possible <br />- Evacuate personnel <br />- Contact local fire department <br />In case of explosion: <br />- Evacuate personnel <br />- Contact local emergency response personnel <br />In case of airborne release. <br />- Evacuate personnel <br />- Contact local emergency personnel <br />In case of spill <br />- Contain spill with berms <br />- Stop leak if possible <br />- Contact emergency spill provider <br />In case of leak: <br />- Stop leak <br />- Clean up with spill pads <br />- Contact emergency spill provide, if necessary <br />
