PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
On February 5, 1996 the most recent investigation to determine the extent of soil and groundwater
contamination was initiated. Five soil borings were drilled, three of which were converted into
monitoring wells, MW1 - MW3. On February 13, 1996 groundwater samples were collected from
the newly installed monitoring wells. Both soil and groundwater contamination were evidenced.
The extent of the soil contamination associated with the former underground storage tank appears
to be defined by results of soil samples collected from SB-A1, MW3, and MW1. The vertical extent
of soil contamination was defined to 33 feet below grade by SB-A2 that was located in the area of
the former tank.
Groundwater contamination was detected in the samples collected on February 13, 1996 from
MW1 and MW2.
PHS/EHD concurs that additional groundwater monitoring and sampling will be required to further
evaluate the extent of groundwater contamination. Please initiate quarterly monitoring, with the
next quarterly report, third quarter, due October 31, 1996.
Also, based on available information, the soil contamination which has been evidenced will continue
to act as a source of contamination to groundwater. Please submit a work plan to evaluate
remedial alternatives for soil and groundwater contamination with the next quarterly report due
October 31, 1996.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Mary Meays at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Margar o, R1=H
V"'
Site Mitigation Unit Lead Senior
MM126500.NOW
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWCQB
George Lockwood, SWRCS
Alan Klein, Fugro West 1050 Melody Lane, Suite 160 Roseville CA 95678
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
