PH$IEHD Comments Letter dated January 14, 1999
The following summarizes the PHS/EHD letter by individual paragraphs and presents.relevant
site information regarding these paragraphs.
Paragraph 2: Summarizes recent groundwater Hydropunch sampling. States elevated
concentrations detected and show a pattern of increasing concentration with depth. States two of
the three deepest groundwater samples had soil samples collected within about one foot and these
soil samples were non-detect for TPHg.
Paragraph 3: States that the closest soil sample to the 31 foot groundwater sample(HP-2WC)
was HP-2SG collected at 21 feet bgs. States that the without a soil sample at or very close to the
31-foot groundwater sample,PHS/EHD is concerned that some undefined subsurface source is
present and effecting the deeper groundwater quality.
« The groundwater sample HP-2WC was collected from the screened interval depths of 31 to
34.0 feet bgs. Soil sample HP-2SJ was collected from a depth of 35.5 feet bgs, 1.5 feet below
the groundwater sample and the soil sample HP-2SJ was non-detect for TPHg and BTEX at
normal reporting limits.
Paragraph 4: States that the apparent increasing groundwater concentration with depth shows that
the groundwater contamination is not vertically defined. States PHS/EHD will require additional
investigation in this area to defined the source influencing this contaminated groundwater area.
The presence of the soil sample HP2-SJ with nondectectable concentrations of TPHg
eliminates the basis for concluding there is a deep undefined source of petroleum
hydrocarbons in the soil in this area.
Paragraph 4: States that PHS/EHD recommends a work plan be submitted for additional
investigation in the HP-2 area and in the immediate area around the former UST pit.
Recommends soil samples in this area be analyzed for TPHg,BTEX,and the oxygenates.
« Soil sample HP-2SG,collected from 20.5 feet bgs,was analyzed for oxygenates and no
oxygenates were detected(Draft Table X)
