Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Re: Tri/Valley Growers Thornton Plant, 26200 Nowell Road,
Thornton, CA
Dear Diane:
Enclosed for review is the summary report for the above
referenced site. We will initiate our recommendations when we
receive permission from your office.
fled During the April 13, 1989 monitoring, an oily substance was
, } - detected on the water probe; when removed from MW-1. The well was
cleared with a nylon brush and pumped for three hours on April
19, 1989. At the and of pumping a water sample was collected for
analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) by EPA methods 8015 and 8020.
A sample was also analyzed for oil and grease by EPA method
413.1. The test results reported 27 parts per million (ppm) oil
and grease and non-detectable levels of BTEX and TPN. Laboratory
reports and chain-of-custody forms are attached.
Conversations ,,tth plant personnel and on-site observations
suggest that the oil and grease is the result of surface runoff
infiltrating into the monitoring well. The well is located next
to the fork lift repair shop which has visible surface spillage
of oil. A previous consultant placed the well in a low area with
a non-waterproof well box. During rainstorms, the box was
submerged in ponding water. In an effort to control this, a PVC
extension was added to raise the top of the well.. This extension
was subsequently broken off. WaterWork has installed a new
waterproof well box which is raised to approximately one inch
above the ground surface to prevent future runoff.
Because of the non-detectable levels of BTEX and TPH, and low
concentrations of oil and grease, we.-..recommend_no.--.further._.action
.-...._-
bs rdquired. The .replacement of the well box should
prevent
future runoff from entering the well.
1710 MAIN SMET • F.SCALON,CA 95320 • (209)8383507
FRESNO,CA(209)222-3495 • RENO.NV(702)788.6830
