(Apex) and
their letter dated April 7, 1997 to you regarding the above referenced site.
PHS/EHD concurs with the recommendations for the next quarterly sampling
event that Apex included in the quarterly report with the following addition. All
the monitoring wells and the two domestic wells-should have analysis for'MTBE
performed on the water samples collected from them. Enclosed is a
memorandum from the State Water Resources Control Board regarding
laboratory methods recommended for use in MTBE analysis and confirmation
analysis. The results of MTBE reported previously at this site indicate methods
8020 and 8260 were used by the laboratory, which was originally recommended
by the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB). Please verify the ;
methods used are the same methods as 8020A and 8260A.
Apex also stated in their recommendations in the quarterly report that after the
next groundwater monitoring event that they would submit a closure request.
PHS/EHD recommends that confirmation soil sampling be conducted at this site
and the samples be analyzed for all constituents currently being tested for in the
groundwater. Please submit a work plan for this work by July 15, 1997. The
information from this work should be included in the closure report.
The April 7, 1997 Apex letter recommends that the on-site drinking water well be
destroyed and a new, deeper well be installed. PHS/EHD was told verbally by
Apex that the current well is 60 feet deep. Current San Joaquin County well
standards require a 100 foot grout seal on domestic or public water wells'so any
new well would have to be drilled much deeper than the existing well. PHS/EHD
recommends drilling a test well and sampling the water for MTBE and EDC,
before installing a new well. PHS/EHD recommends completion of this work
prior to the submission of a closure request.
f A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
i
