GE " c
GENESIS ENGINEERING&REDEVELOPMENT
2.3.3 Sonic Drilling
Sonic drilling will be used to advance the five deep boreholes for collection of soil and
groundwater samples. The 4000 RS Sonic drill rig is equipped with a sonic vibratory drill
head that imparts high frequency sinusoidal wave vibrations into a drill string to effectuate a
cutting action at the bit face. This drill head combines rotation with high-frequency vibration
to advance the drill pipe. Sonic vibrations are transmitted down the drill pipe to the drill bit
causing surrounding soil particles to fluidize, allowing for penetration. Core sampling is
accomplished ahead of the outer casing.
Upon reaching the selected depth intervals for collection of soil or groundwater samples, the
outer drill pipe is then advanced outside the core barrel to keep the borehole open. Prior to
each core sample run, the 6" 8" or 10" outer casing is sealed off, preventing cross-
contamination and formation mixing. The core barrel is then removed from the borehole,
and the soil sample is extracted into a plastic sleeve.
In-situ groundwater samples are collected in discrete zones with a Simulproble®,
HydroPuncho, or other direct push groundwater sampling equipment via the insertion of a
drill rod to the bottom of the borehole. The direct push down-hole sampling equipment shall
consist of a well point and screen attached to the bottom of hollow rods. The well probe
shall be set at the bottom of the borehole and pushed into undisturbed soil. The hollow rod is
then retracted approximately 18 inches to expose the well screen. Using a stainless steel or
disposable bailer, the groundwater samples will be removed from the well screen and
decanted into the laboratory supplied sample containers. After collection of the groundwater
sample, the sampling equipment shall be removed from the borehole and the drill bit and rods
re-inserted in the borehole. The borehole shall then be advanced to the next selected depth
interval and the next groundwater sample shall be collected using the same sampling ro
procedure discussed above. t S (
The soil core generated during boring advancement and well construction will be logged and
subsequently placed in U.S. DOT approved 55-gal drums pending off-site disposal. Waste
disposal procedures are presented in Section 2.5.
2.3.4 Monitoring Well Installation
The monitoring wells will be constructed of 2-inch diameter, schedule 40,poly vinyl chloride
casing, and machine slotted 0.010-inch screen(or other suitable size depending on the results
of the sieve analyses) at the bottom. Ten-foot long well screens will be installed at the
approximate depth interval of 30 feet to 40 feet below grade. The annular space around the
well screen will be backfilled with clean, Monterey sand by placing the sand through the
augers as they are removed from the boring. The well will then be surged to settle the sand
Ripon Farm Services,Inc. 4 of 15
Sampling and Analysis Plan
July 2009
