Box 697
Ripon, CA 95366
SITE CLOSURE, FRAI ZIA BROTHERS WINERY, 170€1 WEST HIGHWAY 120,
RIPON, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We received a letter, dated 25 November 1991, from San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Division requiring no further investigation or remediation for this site and requesting
our review of their findings.
In December 1988, a waste oil tank, a gasoline tank, and a diesel tank were removed.
Gasoline hydrocarbons were detected beneath the gasoline tank. No diesel or other
hydrocarbons were detected. In April 1989, 900 cubic yards of soil were excavated and up
to 2.9 ppm Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) was found in a soil sample
from the base of the excavation at a depth of 25 feet. However, in the east wall of the
excavation, 2000 ppm TPHg was detected. An additional 1200 cubic yards of soil was
excavated along the east side of pit in August 1989. The final depth of excavation was 28
feet. No contamination was detected in any of the soil samples in the tank pit following the
August 1989 excavation.
In September 1990, the first monitoring well (MW1) was installed in the former tank pit to
depth of 65 feet. Low levels of contamination (9.7 ppb benzene, 9.2 ppb toluene, 5.9 ppb
ethylbenzene, and 21 ppb xylenes) were detected in a soil sample collected at a depth of 45
feet in the boring for MW 1. Depth to ground water was about 49 feet. A ground water
sample collected at that time contained 66 ppb TPHg and low levels of toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes. One month later, in October 1990, a ground water sample
collected from MW 1 did not contain detectable contamination. Ground water samples
collected from MW 1 in February and May 1991 contained no contamination other than 0.6
ppb xylene in the February sample.
In May 1992, MW2 and MW3 were installed to the north and northeast of MW 1, in the
downgradient direction, to depths of 65 feet. No soil contamination was detected in the
borings for either well. Ground water samples were also collected from all three wells in
May 1992 but no contamination was detected. Between 1990 and 1992, depth to ground
water remained fairly constant, at about 48 feet.
t
