iSystem Description
Sall Vapor Extraction System
The Solleco 500 cfm SVE system consists of a 500 cfm rated thermal oxidizer with a 40 hp liquid ring
blower Upon system start-up (May 16, 2005), petroleum hydrocarbon laden soil vapors were extracted
from wells VW-1, VW-3, VW-4, VW-8, VW-14, MW-2, MW-8, and MW-9 using the 40 hp blower package
capable of producing up to 28 "Hg vacuum The extracted soil vapors were abated in the thermal oxidizer
prior to discharge to the atmosphere The SVE system has a built-in hour meter that is used to determine
the operational uptime Sample ports (influent, system-Influent, and effluent) are designated to collect air
samples The results of the air samples are used to calculate the destruction efficiency of the system
Operation and Maintenance
During third quarter 2005, Stratus conducted nine site visits to conduct routine operation and
maintenance, and to collect the required discharge samples Since the influent petroleum hydrocarbon
concentrations (measured using PID) from well MW-2 were relatively low (18 6 parts per million by volume
on August 16, 2005), this well was disconnected and well MW-4 was connected for soil vapor extraction
on August 22, 2005 Currently the SVE system is set-up to extract soil vapors from wells VW-1, VW-3,
VW-4, VW-8, VW-14, MW-4, MW-8, and MW-9 During the site visit conducted on September 19, 2005,
a Stratus technician observed that the liquid ring blower was operating at a relative high noise level,
probably due to a bearing malfunction The SVE system was shutdown on the same day Stratus is
currently coordinating with the equipment manfucturer to troubleshoot the bearing malfunction
During the third quarter 2005, the SVE system operated for 2,256 30 hours between June 17, 2005 and
September 19, 2005, with an average operational uptime efficiency of 100 percent The influent GRO
concentrations in the air samples collected on July 6, 2005, August, 2, 2005, and September 1, 2005,
were reported at 35,000 mglm3, 47,000 mglm3, and 10,000 mg/m3, respectively The influent benzene
concentrations in the same samples were reported at 610 mglm3, 550 mg/m3, and 160 mg/m3,
respectively MTBE was not reported in any of the air samples collected during third quarter 2005 The
average system influent airflow rate to the SVE system was observed at 241 40 cfm at an average applied
vacuum of 85 68 inches of water column During the third quarter 2005 (between June 17 and September
19, 2005), approximately 19,522 27 pounds of GRO were extracted and abated by the SVE system A
cumulative mass of approximately 33,485 67 lbs (Figure 6) of GRO has been removed from the
subsurface by both the two 200 cfm (previously operated) and the current 500 cfm SVE systems The
SVE system is operating as designed and is in compliance with the SJVPACD permit requirements
