Box 990
Stockton, CA 95201
Re: Unocal Stockton Service Stations
Dear Mr. Irey:
This is to confirm our telephone conversation of April 27, 1999 that resulted from
my return of your Apri123, 1999 call to me during my absence from the office. You called as a
follow-up of our ongoing discussions of your request that, in addition to the terms of the
settlement in principle reached by San Joaquin County and Union Oil Company of California
("Union.Oil") on February 17, 1999,. Union Oil withdraw its petition for closure of the 1665
Pacific Avenue site that has been pending before the State Water Resources Control Board (the
"State Board") since May 1997.
You informed me that you are aware that the ,State Board will adopt the staff
recommendation to close the site, that you disagree with staffs recommendation, and that unless
Union Oil withdraws the petition before the State Board avis on it,. the San Joaquin County
District Attorney's Office will-4$le suit against Union Oil in.the San Joaquin County Superior
Court. We have consulted the State Board's web site and noted that the petition is not on the
May 1999 workshop calendar.
You confirmed that as far as you are concerned"'there is no settlement in principle
or otherwise" between San Joaquin County and Union Oil unless the petition is withdrawn and
Union Oil agrees to spend at least another $200,000 "removing gasoline from the ground" at the
EXHIBIT 14
