3
KL,EfV1fI.f1fK
addition, the sampling equipment was cleaned with a trisodium phosphatic
wash and distilled rinse water prior to the collection of each soil
sample.
Soil samples were collected by advancinp• the boring to a point immediately
above the sampling depth and then driving a Modified California Sampler
lined with three brass tubes into the undisturbed soil. The sampler was
then removed from the bottom of the boring and the bottom (third) tube
sealed with aluminum foil and tight-fitting plastic caps. The sealed tube
was immediately stored in an iced cooler for possible chemical analysis.
Soil samples for chemical analysis were shipped under chain-of-custody to
Ceotest in Long Beach, California, a certified laboratory.
Each boring was closed after collection of the soil samples. Closure was
by grouting to the surface with tremie rods. The grout mixture consisted
of potable water, Portland cement, and a G to 6 percent bentonite clay
gel.
A Photovac TIP (PID) using a photoionization detector was used in the
field to screen each soil sample. The PID measures ionizable compounds in
ry the air in parts per million by volume (ppmv). Calibration was with 50
ppmv benzene as a span and ambient air as zero. The geologist used the
PID to screen the soil within each middle tube of the sampler. The top
layer of the soil within the tube was removed and the headspace
immediately monitored with the PIA. The reading was noted as the field
- screening result.
_.. The PID readings and other observations were used to select samples to
submit for chemical analysis. Selected soil samples were analyzed for .
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPEi) using the DHS recommended procedure
(GC-FID). The samples were also analyzed for volatile Promatics--benzene,
toluene, xylenes, and ethyl-benzene (BTX&E)—using EPA flethod 8020. A
total of ten soil samples were analyzed from the five borings. A copy of
the Geotest report including_chain-of-custody._.farm.._..as._erclosed._as_Appendix _____.___ .
C. Samples not selected for chemical analysis were transported to cold
storage at Kleinfelder.
85-88-219 4
