I
04 December 1997
AGE-NC Project No 95-0128
' ppm and 4 9 ppm, and Iron was detected at 0 97 ppm and 1 8 ppm in the samples, respectively The
Iron concentration is well below the 10 ppm that may cause fouling of sparge points during air
sparging
I
3 2 3 Bio-Enumeration and Physicochemical Analyses
' The same samples analyzed for manganese and iron content were analyzed for bio-enumeration and
' physicochemical characterization by A Keith Kaufman, M S It was found that the two samples
contained extremely low microbiological populations, although a few selective biodegraders were
detected in sample MW4/10-30-97 Both water samples were found to lack detectable concentrations
' of ortho-phosphate, a vital nutrient to support a microfauna for bioremediation Under the present
circumstances, natural attenuation by bioremediation is not likely to occur
4 0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
41 CONCLUSIONS
The following conclusions were drawn from the results of monitoring this quarter
' 0 The highest concentration of detected dissolved hydrocarbons quantified as TPH-g and
overall BTE&X compounds remain in the vicinity of vapor well VW-1, located at the
' western edge of the dispenser island
• Concentrations of hydrocarbons (and MTBE) decreased in well MW-5 between July and
' October 1997
• it is probable that well MW-7 still delineates the western, up-gradu.nt edge of the dissolved
TPH-g and BTE&X plume, however, it appears that MTBE has diffused up-gradient beyond
MW-7
• The decrease in concentrations of dissolved hydrocarbons in well MW-5 indicates that the
di.Jolved hJ/dro_a, on plume l0 not stable oL haJ mlgraced nVrthw off the J1- .V
delineate the dissolved hydrocarbon plume off-site and determine plume stability, additional
' down-gradient wells will be required
• Due to the lack of significant biodegrading microorganisms and less than detectable
' concentrations of organic-phosphate, natural attenuation of the petroleum hydrocarbons
through biologic activities is not likely to be occurring
• The low concentrations of dissolved iron in the ground water is not likely to cause fouling
Adiamed GeoFnN uonmental Inc
