Physicochemical data associated with the samples analyzed for this site appear generally
consistent with requirements for microbial metabolism and biodegradative activity, however,
comparative microbial enumeration yielded ND levels for heterotrophs and specific gasoline
! biodegraders, and only 2 viable cells per gram of soil for diesel biodegraders (based on triplicate
plating) These data strongly suggest the presence of biotoxic activity, either related to high
levels of contaminant (usually evident at 7,500 to 10,000 ppm gasoline), or the presence of
! some other biotoxic material such as heavy metals It is unlikely that the evident microbial
suppression is due to lack of subsurface oxygenation alone, as moderate levels of facultative
anaerobic organisms should have been encountered While recent exposure of the soil matrix
to contaminant may account for low levels of recoverable selective biodegraders, this does not
Iexplain the low levels of heterotrophs
Analytical data associated with these sample should be reviewed to determine whether
contaminant levels are excessive and thus account for the apparent biotoxic activity
Alternatively, you may wish to consider analyzing these soils for heavy metals and/or other
compounds which might elicit biotoxicity Either passive or active bioremedial treatment for
these soils is not recommended unless and until the apparent biotoxictty present at the site can
be reconciled
Should you have any questions concerning this information, please do not hesitate to contact
me
AKK ch
•
